2024 - The Cyber View from the Hill

17th July 2024

Goalkicking hurting our chances

The 5 game winning streak has come a end, as we returned to dry condictions expsoing our right side defence. It was good to see how the team came back, but against a Top 8 team we let them control the game, getting within striking distance only to see them pull away again. The loss hurt our chances in 2024 as we drop back to 4 points out of the 8. Now off to our annual Gosford clash, this time against the last placed Tigers. 8 more wins to make the finals, but only 9 games to go.

Arrow surgery

It had been booked in but the loss on the weekend made the decision easier, as Arrow has gone under the knife to fix his shoulder immediately after the game. He is now on a 6 month recovery path, as he joins our other players in Tatola, Graham, Tass, Ilias, Lovett out for the season.

Gagai hattrick

Jacob Gagai continues his try scorering in first grade with a hatrick of tries on the end of the right side attacking line. He has scored 9 tries from his first 9 games of first grade and great achievement for a player who has been a journey man over his rugby league career.

Towns hattrick

While we didn't get the choclates in U21s, Dane Towns a junior fullback playing on the left wing scored 3 tries at Coogee Oval as he leads the U21 try scoring list. He is a player with unique ability and speed and is steadily improving each week.

Hall of Fame better structure

The new improved structue of the NRL Hall of Fame inductee process we see a improvement of the process in recognising players. The main inductees came in the 2008 when the Top 100 players were inducted, but was very adhoc after this. With the last few years having people added when they were on the death beds. Adding Hall of Famers in a strcture way allows for a steady adding of players who are worthy of the being the best in the league. However the concept of a NRL Immortal continues to have fundamental issues, and adding immortals regualarly does lead to arguments on who should or should be a immortal, with so many historical players also worthy.

Round 19 - Stat Attack

Statistically it was poor game this week. Completions improved to 89% from 77% last week. Errors improved to 4 from 11 last week. Our best all season. We gave away 6 penalties and 3 6-again calls from 10 last week. Souths Effective 1st tackle dropped to a poor level of 37.6m from 33.2m last week. Our missed tackles was dropped to good level of 25 from 22 last week. Opposition offloads dropped to 11 from 9 last week.

Looking at our left side defence - Johnston-Milne-Wighton-Arrow (4-2-1-0) was steady at 7 missed tackles again this week. On the right side Gagai/Kennar-Kennar/Cook-Walker-CheeKam (3-3-2-1) dropped to 9 from 6 missed tackles last week. Ruck defence Moale/Burgess/LeBlanc-Cook/Mamouzelos-Keppie/Koloamatangi-Koloamatangi/Duncan (3-2-1-2) was steady at 8 missed tackles again this week.

Our go forward improved to 1763m from 1716m last week. With our props made a poor 365m compared to 431m last week. Moale, Keppie, Burgess, LeBlanc, Mamouzelos and Kennar made 10+m per run. Koloamatangi, Arrow, Duncan, MIlne, Johnston, Kennar, Wighton, Walker and Gray made 100+m in the match. Milne ran for 200+m for the match. Defensively Cook was our best in the tackling raking up 45 tackles. Arrow, Burgess and Mamouzelos didn't miss a tackle.
