LOSS 12-32
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have suffered a defeat at the hands of the Canberra Raiders, going down 32-12 in the final fixture of round 21. A fast start from the Raiders saw the home side ahead by 18-0 after just 20 minutes. This ultimately proved to be too much to overcome for South Sydney, who were simply unable to get into the contest at any stage of the game. The Raiders’ first try came in just the fourth minute, with Jordan Rapana finishing off a break from Hudson Young to score in the left corner of the field. The pressure would continue for South Sydney, as Xavier Savage scored the second try of the game just five minutes later with a spectacular leap to gather in a high kick from Jamal Fogarty. Things then took a sad turn for the Rabbitohs, with Alex Johnston going down with what looked to be an issue with his Achillis in the 17th minute of the game. With Johnston leaving the field, the ensuing reshuffle saw Peter Mamouzelos enter the game in the dummy half position, with Damien Cook moving to left centre and Taane Milne pushing out to the left wing to replace Johnston. Sebastian Kris then pushed the score out even further for Canberra, beating three South Sydney defenders with some footwork close to the line to score the home side’s third try. The Rabbitohs managed to stop the Raiders’ momentum somewhat with a 31st minute try to Milne on the wing. A high kick from Cody Walker was allowed to bounce by Savage, with Milne taking advantage of a fortuitous bounce to get his side on the scoreboard. However, the Raiders would hit back just minutes later through Rapana, who received a lucky bounce of his own off a cross-field kick from Fogarty to score his second try of the game. South Sydney then brought the first half to a close after Cody Walker took advantage of a Jack Wighton offload to crash over just seconds before the half-time siren, leaving his side trailing by 16 points at the break. The Rabbitohs needed a strong start to the second half if they were to claw their way back into the contest. Unfortunately, it was the Raiders who managed the first try of the second stanza, with Fogarty sending Ata Mariota through a huge hole to score in the in the 45th minute. Three consecutive set restarts gifted South Sydney a mountain of possession in Canberra’s red zone. They were able to capitalise through Tallis Duncan, who crashed through two Canberra defenders off a nice ball from Mamouzelos. South Sydney were unable to trouble the scorers for the rest of the half. In what proved to be the final scoring play of the game, a penalty to the Raiders saw them draw even further ahead, with Fogarty slotting the goal in the 71st minute for a 20-point lead at 32-12.

Late Changes - Teaupa is out. Subloo starts five-eight, B.Williams at prop, Moretti at hooker, Chapman at second row, B.Gray lock, R.Gray, Christensen, S.Mitchell on the bench. Skelton is the concussion sub. Whippy drops off the bench. Raiders were first to cross the line through Jed Stuart on the wing. The Raiders were gifted a penalty 10 metres out from the try-line, shifting play left where Zac Woolford threw a cutout pass to Stuart who managed to ground the ball before being pushed into touch. Adam Cook converted successfully to lead 6-0. Just minutes later, the Raiders received a six-again call in close try-scoring range. Raiders second-rower Simi Sasagi took on the defence stepping and running up the middle to reach out and score under the posts. Cook converted (12-0). Sasagi was in again three minutes later, stepping the defence and running at an understaffed edge, and worked his way over the try-line. Cook successfully added the extras taking the Raiders to a 18-0 lead early on. The Raiders were given a penalty at the 21-minute mark for obstruction on the kick chase. Raiders capitalised on this advantage as Woolford took control and shifted play to the right where the ball found Nick Cotric who scored on the wing. Cook failed to convert at 22-0. The Rabbitohs were next to score. No.9 Ryan Gray crossed from right in front of the posts to ground the ball and add the first points to the scoreboard for the Rabbitohs. Fletcher Myers converted successfully to trail 22-6. Jed Stuart found his second try of the afternoon with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Adam Cook looped a ball over for Stuart to find his way over the try-line untouched on the wing. Cook converted taking the Raiders to a 22-point lead. The Raiders pulled off one more try to end their commanding first-half performance through winger Albert Hopoate. Cook converted again, taking the Raiders to a 34-6 lead a halftime. A knock-on from Raiders five-eighth Mitch Henderson off the back of an offload from Corey Horsburgh, saw Rabbitohs five-eighth Jarrett Subloo pick up the loose ball with a clear run for the try-line to score first in the second half for South Sydney. Myers’ conversion attempt was unsuccessful at 34-10. A huge defensive effort from the Raiders’ forward pack saw the Rabbitohs come up with an error. With Raiders attacking the line from close range, Jordan Martin took a hard run at the defensive line to score. Cook converted to lead 40-10. A Rabbitohs penalty, then six-again call saw repeat sets very close to the try-line. Fullback Bayleigh Bentley-Hape found the line for South Sydney taking another four points off their chase. Myers converted taking the score to 40-16. Owen Pattie scored next for the Raiders, the young hooker coming off the bench and working his way over from dummy-half. Mitch Henderson converted (46-16). With seven minutes left, Albert Hopoate took the Raiders to 50 points and scored his second for the afternoon. Henderson’s conversion attempt hit the post and was waved away as the Raiders led 50-16. Just three minutes later, Henderson regained possession after a Raiders kick on the last tackle. Stepping through defenders and running for the line, Henderson put together a great try. A successful conversion took the Raiders to a 56-16 victory at GIO Stadium.
