Rabbitohs bounce back
South Sydney bounced back with style on the weekend. It was one of best defensive efforts in years as kept the Sharks scoreless for 70 minutes. In a game where we had lost both of our starting centres and 3 players playing first grade for South Sydney for the first time, it was great to see the team step up. Our left edge continues to dominate scoring 4 tries. It was our biggest win over the Sharks at Homebush in front our biggest crowd against the Sharks at Homebush. Still 8 more wins to make the finals. Now off to Magic Round in Bris-Vegas to play a in form Dolphins in a our home game?
Johnston 100 tries at single venue
In a high scoring encounter it was our left edge who scored all of our 7 tries. Johnston scored another career double, his 60th time he has scored 2 or more tries in a game, and his 11th for the season and 221st for his career. Again on the end of slick backline play. Johnston became the first person to score a try in each game for 8 rounds of football ever. While Cody Walker also scored a double, his 17th time he has scored 2 or more tries in a game. He has now surpassed Harold Horder to move into 5th on the all time South Sydney premiership try scoring list, just 1 behind Ian Moir.
Siegwalt debut
Lattrell Siegwalt replaced his name sake this week in the centres and held his own like a veteran. Siegwalt is a later bloomer making his debut at 25, after a few failed attempts at playing NRL over the years intially with Canterbury and St George-Illawarra in the juniors and then Redcliffe and Brisbane in the seniors. Initially a fullback or 5/8, he found a home at left centre where he could use his skills and running game. Looking forward to how his career progresses. He has even applied to play for France in this year Rugby League World Cup.
Lenoy-Sam double
This week we saw a experiment in U21s with Lenoy-Sam start at fullback in the first half before he reverted to left centre in the second half. While a bit rusty at times in defence, Lenoy-Sam did look good in attack chimming into backline moves and scoring a try. He made it a double in the second half this time from strong running. He is work in progress as his career develops.
AJ The record breaker
What else can Alex Johnston achieve? On the weekend he set a new milestone as the first player in NSWRL/ARL/NRL history to score 100 tries at a single venue(Stadium Australia), he is well clear of his next rival. He did it in style by scoring another hattrick of tries. It was his 17th hattrick of tries, another NSWRL/ARL/NRL record. 2 new records in the same game. He is not only a South Sydney legend but also one of the NRL greatest players. With many more tries to come. He will leave a lasting legacy for geneations to come. All hail AJ the great.
