In a high scoring contest, the Knights hang on to win 38-42 after leading 22 nil midway through the first half. Newcastle went back to back when Marzchew scored his secocond again down the right side. A dropped ball by Newcastle and South Sydney hit back from a crash ball to Keppie who scored. Mitchell converts. Newcastle scored again from a long range try when Ponga broke the line for Lucas to score his second. South Sydney regather from a short kickoff, and soon after MItchell sent Johnston over in the corner. Mitchell fails to convert. In a scrappy final five minutes, its Newcastle who go at half time with a commanding 10 to 28 lead.
South Sydney opened the scoring almost immediately in the second half when Mitchell and Johnston combined before a infield kick sent Walker over. Mitchell converts. A penalty goal has the Knights inch away. 16 to 30. South Sydney were in again after a Walker kick in behind the line saw Duncan who had just moved to left second row score. Mitchell converts. South Sydney go back to back when a backline line sweep sees Johnston in for his second for the game and try 221. Mitchell fails to convert. A dropped ball by Murray and Newcastle scored a power try to Marzchew in the corner. His third for the afternoon. Newcastle this time drop the ball and Walker again kicks in behind the line to regather and score under the posts. Mitchell converts. Its a 4 point ball game with 13 on the clock. South Sydney equalise when another left side backline sweep sees Johnston offload to Mitchell to score in the corner. Mitchell converts from the sideline and South Sydney hit the lead 38 to 36. But it was shortlived when Aitken dropped the ball soon after the kickoff and the Knights score to regain the lead. Newcastle hang to win, the point a minute contest, with South Sydney going down in their highest ever losing score, 38 to 42.
