LOSS 18-26

41,424 rugby league fans came tonight to see rugby league history achieved. And they weren't disappointed when Alex Johnston became the greatest NRL rugby league try scorer in the 118 year history of the game, scoring his 213th try in spectacular fashion. The game started with a torrid openning period where both teams had field position and opportunities to score. It was the Sydney Roosters, who opened the scoring after sustained presure and a soft surface saw Cherry-Evans step Murray to cross. More pressure from the Sydney Roosters saw Tupou step a scrambling defence to score. South Sydney found themselves down 0 to 12 early in the contest. South Sydney then hit back after a dropped ball by Topou, gifted South Sydney field position. A well placed kick by Sullivan forced a drop out and soon after it was a backline play that saw Mitchell send Johnston over out wide, to equal Ken Irvine's try scoring record with his 212th try. Mitchell converted the try. The teams then went into the break with South Sydney behind by 6 to 12.

After the break it was South Sydney who opened the scoring immediately when Fifita broke the line, passed to Michell who ran down field and set up Alex Johnston finish off the try running 40 metres to score the record breaking 213th try in spectacular fashion. The stadium erupted in to scenes of joy as thousands of fans jumped the field dyfing 2 year bans and $5,500 fines as the rugby league public crowned Alex Johnston the "Greatest NRL try scorer", picking him up as fans swarmed his achievement. Play stopped as players and fans swamped Johnston, before all players were ushered off the field and back to the dressing rooms. Alex Johnston donned a special record breaking jersey for the rest of the match. It took over 10 minutes for playing field was cleared of both fans and litter, play resumed with Mitchell converting the try from the sideline. 12 all. A penalty from Fifita and a dropped bomb from Gray, gave the Rooster field position, and they scored out wide to regain the lead. A further penalty goal extended their lead to 8 points. Then with 10 minutes to go South Sydney hit back when Wighton, who had just shifted to halfback, kicked in behind the line for Grahamm to score. Mitchell added the extras. 18 to 20. The Roosters scored late in the game from a gubber in goal to win the contest 18-26. In a uncanny co-incidence the 18 to 26 losing scoreline was exactly the same scoreline in the game Ken Irvine broke the try scoring record. Johnston was presented the game ball by the Australian Prime Minister and Rabbitohs #1 fan Anthony Albanese.

Reserve Grade - NSW Premiership Round 2

v Sydney Roosters, Redfern Oval, Sun Mar 15 2:00pm [BAR TV]

LOSS 18-30

Late Changes - Lawry and Dickson are out. Graham-Taufa started at centre, Siegwalt at half. Williamson is the concussion sub. Pele dropped off the bench. The Rabbitohs NSW Cup side faced the Roosters at Redfern Oval in a tough Round two encounter. The Red and Green were unable to contain the Roosters attack, going down 18-30 in front of the home faithful. The game opened in a tight opening quarter, a dropped ball by Mazzone allowed Roosters field position. And soon after they opened the scoring through a powerful run from the second rower. South Sydney hit back through Bentley-Hape cleaning up a lose ball, linking up with Dufty who ran 80m to score. 6 all. The Roosters are in ain after Vito dropped the ball, and a few tackles later they spun the ball and score on the wing. On halftime Bentley-Hape kicked a long range penalty goal. Halftime 8 to 10. The Roosters open the scoring when the heads opened up out wide and scored a easy try under the posts. Ten minutes later they scored again through a left side blind side rush. A poor kick chase and the Roosters are in again in a long range try. A lucky bounce off a chip kick in behind the line saw the Roosters cross for their fourth try after the break near the posts. They lead 8 to 30. Late in the game after sustained pressure, a offload from Ataata saw Waitere score. Bentley-Hape converts. Then right on fulltime Waitere with a good short ball close to the line sent Vito over for a try. Bentley-Hape failed to convert. South Sydney had reduced the margin to 12, but lost the encounter 18 to 30.
