LOSS 12-26
South Sydney's season came to an end with a 26-12 defeat at the hands of the Sydney Roosters. The oldest rivalry in the game with everything to play for attracted a bumper crowd at Accor Stadium to set the scene for a massive night. Despite winning the early territory battle, a poor kick was compounded by a penalty to give the Roosters the best chance through the early stages, only for a forward pass to halt their momentum. When Alex Johnston was unable to bring down a Sam Walker kick cleanly, Corey Allan was there to pounce and open the scoring in the eighth minute. Errors started to creep in for both teams before the Rabbitohs enjoyed their best chance with a shift to the right, before the Roosters defence thwarted their claims. A stray knee to Blake Taaffe forced him from the field after 18 minutes. That forced changes with Isaiah Tass shifting to the wing, Johnston to fullback and Michael Chee Kam into the centres and Arrow to second row. Souths were able to keep the pressure on and eventually crack the Roosters soon after. A decoy play close to the line saw Tevita Tatola drag in two defenders and Damien Cook putting a lovely pass onto the chest of Cameron Murray to put them in front 6-4. After Cody Walker was questionably penalised for an escort within kicking range the Roosters were able to tie things up, 6 all. The 32nd minute was one of mixed fortunes, with the returning Izaac Tu'itupou Thompson putting on the biggest hit of the night on Billy Smith, before news that Taaffe failed his HIA. The Roosters received the benefit of another contentious call to give them another set on the Rabbitohs' line, and they took full advantage with Fetalaiga Pauga scoring in the corner to put the Roosters up 10-6 at the break.
A good start to the half was offset with the Roosters scoring first through James Tedesco to open up a 10-point lead early in the second stanza. With a wealth of possession in enemy territory, the Rabbitohs finally prevailed through Chee Kam who used his strength from close range to force his way over and bring it back to 16-12 with 22 minutes remaining. The next period was hotly contested as both sides traded blows and had their opportunities to attack, with some quality defence on show. The task was made tougher as Billy Smith barged his way over the line in the 70th minute to put the opposition up 20-12. South Sydney's season came to an end soon after with Sam Walker crossing to put the result beyond doubt.

(2v3) v Warriors, North Sydney Oval, Sat Sep 2 1:00pm [NSWRL TV]
WIN 26-12
Late Changes - Gordon started at prop, B.Gray on the bench. Alvarado is the concussion sub. Teams two and three opened the 2023 finals series in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, and it was the second-placed South Sydney Rabbitohs who overcame the Warriors 26-12 at North Sydney Oval. South Sydney, with hooker Peter Mamouzelos causing havoc from dummy-half, overcame the early loss of damaging prop Daniel Suluka-Fifita in the opening play of the game to prevail in the second half after both teams were level at 6-6 at the main break. Despite the loss of Suluka-Fifita, the more experienced South Sydney team was able to take control of the second half after a fairly even opening half. The loss of Suluka-Fifita in the 1st minute of the game caused a reshuffle of the team, with LOvett moving to prop and O'Neill cooming on at left second row. The Warriors got off to a dream start in their first set of the game when prop forward Zyon Maiu'u burst through the heart of Souths’ defence from halfway, going on a 30-metre run before drawing the fullback and finding lock forward Tanner Stowers-Smith to score behind the posts. With Eiden Ackland’s easy conversion attempt, the Warriors held a 6-0 lead after just two minutes. South Sydney hit back when a quick play-the-ball by Mamouzelos allowed five-eighth Dion Teaupa to take advantage and dive over from dummy-half. Hawkins’ conversion from out wide levelled the scores at 6-6 after 17 minutes. Both sides had plenty of good attacking opportunities as the half progressed, but a combination of last-ditch defensive efforts and poor options with the ball saw both the teams go into the main break at 6-6. But South Sydney exploded out of the blocks early in the second half, scoring back-to-back tries to take a commanding 18-6 lead after 53 minutes. Interchange forward Brock Gray proved unstoppable close to the line by steaming onto a short pass from Hawkins to score next to the posts, before a shift right enabled Shannon Gardiner to stretch the Warriors’ defence and offload to Matt French to score next to the posts. South Sydney put the lead beyond two converted tries when Jed Cartwright was denied a try but awarded a penalty, with Hawkins making no mistake with the conversion attempt to extend the scoreline to 20-6 after 63 minutes. The Warriors finally put a halt to the Rabbitohs’ scoring spree when some repeat sets inside the 20 paid dividends. James Gavet stormed his way over to score from close range, and with Ackland’s conversion from in front of the posts the Warriors were back in the game at 20-12 with 12 minutes remaining. South Sydney put the game to bed in the final three minutes with a try started and finished by fullback Jacob Gagai. On halfway he put centre Taane Milne into a yawning gap with a reverse pass, before taking the pass back to streak away and score, with Hawkins converting once more to give the Rabbitohs a well-deserved 26-12 victory.

WIN 30-24
Late Changes - Karapani is out. Skelton starts at centre, Gordon at prop, Rahme at lock, B.Gray and Duncan on the bench. Alvarado is the concussion sub. South Sydney has a week to rest up before The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Grand Final after winning a brutal but thrilling Major Semi-final 30-24 over the North Sydney Bears at Leichhardt Oval today. The Rabbitohs handed the Minor Premiers their third defeat on the trot to qualify themselves for the 24 September decider at CommBank Stadium. Early tries to both sides set the tone for a close match. First Bears winger Allan Fitzgibbon finished off a 30-metre shift in the right corner, then Rabbitohs five-eighth Dion Teaupa supported his prop Shaq Mitchell to gratefully accept the offload and score. But then the Rabbitohs started to bound away with another three unanswered tries – centre Izaac Thompson scored off a Teaupa cut-out pass, and winger Tyrone Munro grabbed a double in the right corner. The second was off a superb flick pass from Leonard Skelton. Newly-crowned The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Player of the Year Dean Hawkins had a perfect conversion record (4-4) and the Rabbitohs were out to a comfortable 24-4 half-time lead. The Bears needed to be the first to score after the break and they were, with Fitzgibbon getting his double and then second rower Reuben Porter crashing over after a Jesse Marschke bust upfield. That narrowed the gap to 10 points, 24-14. The Bears were on a roll when Fitzgibbon scored his hat-trick 24-18. The teams traded tries – Rabbitohs winger Tom Carr, then Bears prop Regan Hughes crossing – to set up a grandstand finish with the difference being a converted try. South Sydney employed good game management in holding possession to snuff out the Bears fightback.

WIN 22-18
Late Changes - Alvarado is out. Rahme started at lock. Duncan on the bench. Skelton is the concussion sub. A Tyrone Munro try with five minutes on the clock sealed a 21st premiership for South Sydney in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup over a courageous North Sydney 22-18 in today's Grand Final at CommBank Stadium. Winger Allan Fitzgibbon, who has scored four tries in two finals games so far, was a late change by coach Jason Taylor. Fitzgibbon made way for Alfred Smalley, who made his NRL debut last year with Manly Warringah, and it paid early dividends. With little room for Kieran Hayman and Elie El-Zalkhem to work on the short side, Smalley tippy-toed the last metres down the left edge to score in the fifth minute. Souths prop Shaq Mitchell used his strength to twist himself and two defenders over the line close to the uprights to open his side’s scoresheet. The Bears second try came when five-eighth Jesse Marschke danced through four defenders from 25 metres out. The Rabbitohs second try came when second rower Ethan O’Neill followed a Taaffe grubber in the 32nd minute. A penalty goal to the Bears and it was another close one 40 years on with the scoreboard locked 12-12 at half-time.
Souths poked their noses in front in the second half after five-eighth Dion Teaupa linked with centre Izaac Thompson, who juggled the ball but still got the pass away to Tom Carr for a 16-12 lead. It was a moment for the Rabbitohs winger, who spent the previous two seasons in North Sydney colours. It could have been a bigger lead when Matt French charged down a kick regathered and ran 60 meters, when he got pulled down 10m from the line with Issac Thompson looming up on his inside. Bears back-rower Reuben Porter had his moment with 12 minutes left on the clock when he received the ball five metres out and simply stepped back inside to crash over. The Bears clung to a two-point lead 16-18 desperate to win their first NSW Cup since 1993. But that hope evaporated when Hawkins’ cut-out pass found Taaffe, who sent Munro over in the 75th minute to win the game 22-18. Their first reserve grade premiership for 40 years.
South Sydney captain and NSWRL’s Player of the Year in the NSW Cup, Dean Hawkins, sent the cut-out pass to Taaffe on the fly. Hawkins converted from the sideline to make sure of the victory. "It’s what this group has done all year - just hang in, hang in, and we got the try in the last five minutes to seal it," Hawkins said. "Honestly, we’ve worked our arses off for each other and we’re such a tight group. We never give up and that showed today."
"We knew it would be like that didn’t we? It was a very tough game of football between two very good football teams," Rabbitohs coach Joe O’Callaghan said. "We were coming second last on the ladder in Round Nine or 10, but we kept finding ways to win – they did it again today. I’m proud of how they stuck together because our season could have gone the other way very quickly. They just stayed at it for so long and that’s what has made me so proud." Player of the Match was NRL star Blake Taaffe whose acceleration and final pass to Munro put the winger over in the north-east corner to rapturous applause of the 10,173 crowd.

WIN 42-22
Late Changes - Bentley-Hape, Subloo and Swann were trimmed 24h before the game. Chapman is out, Alvarado is the concussion sub. The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup reigning premiers South Sydney Rabbitohs have added another trophy to their cabinet by claiming the 2023 NRL State Championship after defeating the Brisbane Tigers 42-22 at Accor Stadium today. A hattrick to winger Tyrone Munro guided his team to their first State Championship win – the sixth NSW team to do so since the match between NSW Cup and Qld Cup premiers was introduced in 2014. Munro, who scored the match-winning try for the Rabbitohs against the North Sydney Bears in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Grand Final a week ago, was named today’s Player of the Match. The Rabbitohs were the first to open the scoring through Munro, who regathered the ball on a fifth-play kick to score (4-0). In the 18th minute Souths shifted the ball out to the left for winger Tom Carr to cross in the corner. Halfback Dean Hawkins was unlucky off the tee leaving his teams lead to eight points. The Tigers hit back through utility Cole Geyer, son of Melbourne Storm star Matt Geyer, who buried his way over the line off his first touch of the ball (8-6.) With the heat starting to take a toll on each side, a handful of mistakes were made in the back end of the first half. Just before half-time, Munro scored his second of the day after tip-toeing down the right sideline to extend their teams lead. Despite best efforts, Hawkins failed to add the two points, leaving the Rabbitohs lead to a converted try at the break 12-6. .The Rabbitohs came out firing in the second half scoring two tries back-to-back within two minutes with second rower Ethan O’Neill and five-eighth Dion Teaupa both finding the line. Hawkins’ luck shifted in the second half with the halfback converting both tries to stretch the lead to 24-6. Carrying all the momentum, the Rabbitohs continued to capitalise with Munro crossing for his third in the 59th minute – his first hat-trick of the season. While the Tigers tried to test the Rabbitohs in attack, the Hostplus Cup winners struggled to find the line with the Rabbitohs defence proving too strong. The Tigers found the line for the first time in the second half through second rower Tom Rafter, who broke through the Rabbitohs defensive wall in the 62nd minute (30-12). But then the Rabbitohs added more salt to the wound in the final ten minutes, with Carr and lock Tallis Duncan each adding four pointers to the board (42-12) – Carr swooping on a loose pass for a 70 metre run. Two late consolation tries to the Tigers centres Solomona Faataape and Kane Bradley unfortunately was still too little too late for Brisbane.
Dane Gagai was charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle charge. He has since taken the early guilty plea which means he will miss one match.
