LOSS 16-36
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have suffered a defeat at the hands of the Newcastle Knights in their round 25 clash at Accor Stadium. The Rabbitohs looked strong early, leading the Knights 12-6 for much of the first half after tries to Jack Wighton and Taane Milne. Unfortunately for South Sydney, a hat-trick to Dane Gagai and a doubles to Fletcher Sharpe and Jack Cogger ultimately proved to be too much for the Red and Green to overcome, as they finished off on the wrong side of a 36-16 scoreboard. The match began in a scrappy fashion, with both sides squandering several early chances at either end of the field. Newcastle were first make the most of their opportunities, with Fletcher Sharpe and Dane Gagai combining for Sharpe to score in the right corner after 11 minutes. The Rabbitohs were swift to hit back, as Milne displayed great strength to beat both Gagai and Sharpe and score just five minutes later. Wighton crossed next with a similar effort to Milne, running a hard line close to the posts to get past three Newcastle defenders and slam the ball to give South Sydney the lead. A high shot from Leo Thompson on Cameron Murray saw South Sydney advance easily downfield in the set immediately after the Wighton try. The Rabbitohs then enjoyed a glut of possession down in Newcastle’s red zone thanks to a string of penalties and set restarts, although they were unfortunately unable come away with points. Newcastle received an extended run of possession of their own later in the half, coming away with two tries – one each to Dylan Lucas and Dane Gagai – to put themselves ahead 18-12. A high shot on Tyson Frizell saw Murray earn a trip to the sin-bin. The ensuing penalty was converted by Kalyn Ponga, giving Newcastle a 20-12 lead at half-time. Both sides went set for set early in the second half, but were starved of opportunities to attack as the game descended into an arm wrestle. That all changed in the 53rd minute, when Kalyn Ponga broke through the South Sydney line off a kick return to put the Knights on the attack. They capitalised, with Ponga dealing out the damage again as he combined with Jack Cogger to set him up for his first try of the game. Cogger then completed his double just six minutes later, finding his own way through a gap in the retreating South Sydney defence line. A crafty grubber to the in-goal from Jack Wighton saw Tallis Duncan cross with ten minutes remaining. Sebastian Su’a was then sin-binned in retrospect for a high shot on Davvy Moale in the set leading up to Duncan’s try. This proved to be of little consequence, with Dane Gagai completing his hat-trick in the 77th minute in what proved to be the final scoring play of the game.

Late Changes - Munro is out. Kennar starts on the wing, B.Gray prop, Webster-Mansfield second row, Tsikrikas on the bench. Whippy was the concussion sub. Kennedy dropped off the bench. The Newcastle Knights stormed into Accor Stadium and claimed a hard-fought 36-24 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but they had to weather a fierce second-half comeback from the home side to secure the win. The opening half was a showcase of the Knights' supremacy, as they scored four unanswered tries to establish a lead that would prove insurmountable. The action kicked off when Hayden Sutton crossed the line just eight minutes in, setting the tone for the first half. Sutton’s try was a sign of things to come, as the Knights swiftly took control. For the next 10 minutes the teams traded sets, each trying to assert their dominance. But it was Newcastle who capitalised on their opportunities, maintaining their momentum with a relentless attack leaving the Rabbitohs scrambling to keep up. In the 11th minute, Jackson Hastings made a line break through the Rabbitohs' defence, creating a golden opportunity for the Knights. Thomas Jenkins seized the moment with a deft kick-chase, dotting down for Newcastle’s second try. The Rabbitohs briefly regained possession but were thwarted by a critical error, ending their chance to respond. The Knights were not done yet. By the 22nd minute, Riley Jones took advantage of a clever pass to cross the line for Newcastle’s third try of the half. Hastings added the conversion, extending the lead 16-nil. Before the first-half siren rang out, the Knights went in for another through Sutton for his second. Hastings missed the conversion but made a last minute penalty shot for a 22-nil lead heading into the second half. As the whistle blew for halftime, the Knights were firmly in the driver's seat with a four-try advantage securing a comfortable buffer. As the second half kicked off, the Knights wasted no time extending their advantage. Temple Kalepo touched down on the left edge. Despite a missed conversion, the Knights looked unstoppable, piling on five unanswered tries to stretch their lead by a commanding 26 points. The Rabbitohs, determined to turn the tide, finally broke their drought in the 55th minute. Ryan Gray fought his way over the line, with Brent Hawkins successfully converting to close the gap to 26-6. Newcastle quickly responded to the Rabbitohs' challenge. Fullback David Armstrong made a break before offloading to captain Tom Cant, who powered through on a 40-metre run to score. The Knights seemed to regain control but the Rabbitohs weren’t done yet. The final quarter intensified when Siliva Havili burrowed his way under the posts. Another successful conversion narrowed the deficit 30-12 with 17 minutes remaining. The Bunnies struck again when Hawkins broke through the Knights’ defence, offloading to Dion Teaupua who scored a crucial try. Hawkins’ conversion brought the Rabbitohs within 12 points at 18-30, igniting hopes of a comeback. As the final minutes ticked down, the Rabbitohs intensified their push and the Knights appeared to falter under mounting pressure. With just four minutes remaining, the Bunnies scored once more. But Newcastle's defence held firm and their resilience was rewarded when they scored a decisive final try through Thomas Jenkins, his second of the night. The Knights secured a 36-24 victory, weathering the Rabbitohs’ late charge to clinch a well-earned win.
