In an emotional evening South Sydney ran out 48 to 6 winners against last years premiers. Both teams walked out as one and stood as one to provide a guard of honour for Jai Arrow to walk out and ring the liberty bell. Early nerves by young Ward saw Reynolds take a intercept and run 60 metres. South Sydney scrambled well to save a try. South Sydney opened the scoring from a well placed bomb by Ward that saw Kosi to regather and score. Siegwalt converted. South Sydney went back to back a few tackles after the kickoff, when Jye Gray broke the line and setup Johnston score another try. Siegwalt converts. An error by Brisbane gave South Sydney field position, and it was Fifita who powered over from close range. Another dropped ball by Brisbane, and once again South Sydney are on the attack, this time it was Siegwalt who setup Johnston for his second try. Siegwalt and South Sydney have a commanding 24 nil lead. A rare error by Reynolds as he kicks out on the full, allowed SOuth Sydney a final attack before the break. It was then Ward with a chip kick to Walker who passed to Humphreys to score near the posts. Siegwalt converts and South Sydney go into half time 30 nil. It was the biggest half time deficet the Broncos have ever had.
Broncos opened the scoring of the second half when Ward went for a 40-20 but kicked the ball out of the full. The Broncos then scored in corner. After Brisbane had showed vast improvement in the third quarter, it was South Sydney who scored next, through slick backline movement that saw Johnston score his 18th hatrick. Siegwalt converts from the sideline. South Sydney scored again through a break by Sullivan who set up Redal to score his first ever try on debut next to the posts. Finally a great break by Duncan saw South Sydney on the attack, Duncan was able to offload and the ball moved to Ward who kicked in behind the line for Johnston to score his 4th try of the night. Siegwalt converted South Sydney running out big winners 48 to 6. The highest ever total by a South Sydney team against Brisbane.
